Six years ago, I mentioned on the blog I would love to digitize all fifty state birds and flowers, but the idea seemed overwhelming. Then the comment came in– well, why not just do one every two weeks and slowly go through them? So that’s exactly what I did…

…and there it is!

The quilt is now off to two AQS shows in Hartford, CT and Paducah, KY. I saw the list of accepted quilts and in my category, there are 60– it’s about a quarter of the entire show! The field is also full of multiple award winning quilters. In spite of that, I don’t think my quilt is an embarrassment and there’s quite a few awards I’m hopeful to be considered for.

First up– the “Heaviest Quilt” award will be mine, hands down. I hope they have some big guys at the show to hoist this baby up. When I get it back, I would be wise to add a warning label– ATTENTION: SLEEPING UNDER THIS QUILT MAY CAUSE SUFFOCATION.

Then– I certainly should be considered for “Best Rendering of Mount Rushmore at a Reduced Size.” Yep– it’s one of the accomplishments in this quilt I am most proud of.

Finally, if we could only convince AQS to hang the quilts facing the wall, Best in Show would surely be mine for the label. Machine embroidery, for the win!

Pride comes before a fall, right?! While taking the photographs, I slipped and fell on the ice! My shoulder got the brunt of it and I had to cancel some celebratory plans I had today. I can’t raise my left arm above my waist, so I’m afraid I might have torn something. (Don’t worry– I checked and I can still get food into my mouth.) At least my quilt didn’t tear, although it went flying into a (clean) 😅 snow bank. I’m trying to avoid a doctor visit for now– we’ll see where we are in a few days.

So that’s it for Carefree Highways– thanks are in order to all who listened to me for the whole month– you also deserve a ribbon! Blog readership is down, needless to say… 🤣 but I’m happy I entered the show or I probably would never have finished it– there were many difficult parts that warranted shelving it. Now you won’t have to hear about it again until April, when I go to the Hartford show. xox.

In the meantime, I am FREE– it’s so great to think about digitizing new designs, finishing up A Year on Sugar Meadow, and getting back to some fun sewing.

I did move along some more Posh Penelope blocks, but I’m wondering if I will make it to my sewing day next week with this shoulder. Cutting more pieces may be tough. I’m really loving the white backgrounds most, but I still want a mix. It’s a good moment to take stock of which backgrounds to cut for the next batch– I haven’t done any blue yet.

And the cross stitch stocking is coming along– we have a tree!

Hoping I can muddle forward with my bum shoulder, but maybe a couple of days of rest are just what I need.

xox

I don’t always like/respond to your blog posts, but I do read them. I enjoyed your Carefree Highways journey. You also deserve to win the Perseverance in the face of a monster quilt, and Don’t

take the easy road to finishing categories. Good Luck! Hope your shoulder is better.

    It’s “sew” BEAUTIFUL!!

So sorry about your shoulder and hoping it’s nothing serious. The older we get, we don’t “bounce” as well as we did when we were younger.

Take care of yourself. XOXO Dottie

I love the finished quilt! I hope you get multiple ribbons at both shows.

Your fall may well result in the torn rotator cuff but you might be able to get along without surgery. I have both torn, left worse than right. They have been MRI’d and the right the doctor had said as long as my pain can be controlled we won’t push into the surgery. I will have to make an appt to talk to him about the left, which is worse, I think, but the only pain I can relate to it is in the elbow. Weird but truly possible. I take two tylenol and two ibuprofen daily and get by with most things I have to accomplish. The recovery time for surgery is lengthy I’ve been told so maybe I can avoid it! That’s my hope anyway. And hope it also for you!

Thanks! So I actually had the surgery on the other shoulder which I don’t regret– but it took about six months to get over that! I seem to be okay today– I’ll keep you posted! xox

I do hope your shoulder plays nicely and heals itself – soon!! Your quilt is magnificent. You must be so proud. Not only does it look spectacular, but it has added “value” through being all your work from conception through to execution. It couldn’t be any more representative of you unless you had grown the cotton and woven the fabrics! I do hope that the judges and the quilt show visitors appreciate everything that has gone into it. Good luck!

Loving the Posh Penelope blocks. I think you can give yourself a break after The Monster and not worry about cutting more blocks. Maybe reward yourself and just go along to the sewing day for the company rather than the sewing. I’m rewarding myself for finishing my son’s quilt by starting a new quilt. As you do! Also hoping to get into some embroidery. It’s been a while but this morning’s emails brought a newsletter from my brand machine announcing that February is “Embroidery Month”. Who knew?

    Take care.

To weigh it, I’d have to use that method where I weigh myself– no thanks! xox

It is the most beautiful quilt I have ever seen. The amount of work you put into it is incredible. I love it. It deserves first prize in all the categories. I too read your blog but I have never commented on it before, but that quilt is just so gorgeous I had to let you know how I felt.

Take care of the shoulder you don’t want a lasting problem with it. If you go to the doctor perhaps, he will suggest some Physical Therapy for it. I find that PT is a help for my shoulder.

i love your quilt! ! I’m plugging along on my blocks. Some of my favorites – I love cross stitch. I love that you’re one of the only designers that does machine cross stitch today. Hoping my quilt gets finished this year. And that your shoulder recovers and you win ALL the awards!!

It’s a bit problematic because my name is on there? What would you suggest– leave it blank, to fill in?

Congratulations on this extremely special quilt! I admire your perseverance. You are an inspiration!

Praying you haven’t wrecked your other shoulder! I, like you, don’t regret having had a shoulder repaired. It took a while to recover, but NO more pain!

I’ve read with interest your journey through the completion of this beautiful quilt. It’s definitely a WOW!. The planning and start of the design is always exciting, but towards the end it’s sometimes like trudging through mud, but we persevere because we know the finish is so satisfying and rewarding. I would love to see this hanging in the U.S. Capitol for our 250th birthday! Thank you for your blogpost as it is the last that I read (and re-read) after going through my e-mail. It gives me the push to get in my sewing room and get busy! Sorry to hear of your slip and fall. Sending healing thoughts from the opposite coast!
