Before I start my whining, I’d just like to wish everyone a happy Labor Day! We are having gorgeous, windy fall weather today, with bright sunshine.

So here I am— phew! That was a lot. More than I expected. The first thing I remember after waking up was hearing a nurse typing say, “Gosh, you really had a lot of work done here!” Never a good look. Then I noticed I was out for a good two hours, not the predicted 45 minutes. I think my surgeon gave up his lunch hour!

My sheaf of notes they gave me said “Massive Rotator Cuff Repair”— there were no fewer than five things that had disconnected. So I have to believe this wasn’t all caused by my slip and fall— probably just the old bad shoulder DNA again. Many questions are answered in the course of life— we now know why I could never do a cartwheel as a kid, right?

I’m happy to say the pain level has been very manageable— except when I lie down, so sleeping has been tough. But productivity has not fallen by the wayside— I got about 50 pages of puzzles finished and even made half of a tiny 8 point star– not bad for four hours of work, right?

I’m supposed to keep my shoulder totally immobile for 4 weeks— worst case, I’ll fly out to Las Vegas and play slots to alleviate the boredom. There are lots of fun things you can do with one arm, right?

Here are some of my cards I received in the mail—

Gorgeous folded paper bouquet:

From my golden retriever loving brother:

Beautiful custom chicken/quilt card– pays to have artistic friends!

My bank:

So that’s it for me— just wanted to check in!
thank you all for your well wishes and I’ll update again soon.

xox

Veteran of two rotator cuff repairs here (and, I’m afraid, a third on the way, which seems totally unfair since I have just the usual two shoulders!)…but I digress.

If you are a side sleeper, try putting a really big, firm-ish pillow alongside your body, and cuddle it like a teddy bear. The pillow supported my arm well, and helped me fall asleep many nights. When I had to lie on my back, a thin pillow under the elbow helped balance the immobilizing sling in much the same way.

I’ll be thinking about you and hoping you have a speedy recovery. They wouldn’t let me stitch for 6 weeks after working on my dominant shoulder, and I was like an addict without a fix. Look at you: already stitching! Huzzah!

Another rotator cuff repair veteran here. I was potentially looking ahead at lots of PT for my shoulder anyway, then I fell, & REALLY did it up right. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, go directly to surgery! I came out hearing words like “shredded bicep tendon”. I completely agree with your assessment of “ouch”. I slept in a recliner for a couple of months, because I do love to sleep. I am happy to be pain free, as I pray you will be soon.

Best of luck with your PT and recovery! Keep up your great attitude, it will help immensely!

“SEW”, “SEW” glad the surgery is done and you’re on the road to recovery. Sometimes I “think” the surgeons take a “cursory” look at what needs to be done (based on tests, x-rays, etc.) and give you their best guess on what needs done/time to get done and then once they get in to the surgery, find “stuff” that doesn’t show up on the previous tests, etc.

That being immobile is a REAL pain. I know when I broke my arm (humerus – titanium rod from shoulder to elbow), I couldn’t sleep in bed – had to sleep in a recliner for 3 months. One of our kitties kept me company during that time.

Your half block is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous. You’re doing GREAT. Lots of “gentle” hugs, lots of love and prayers for the recovery. XOXO Dottie
